Benapole: A suspected robber was killed in a gunfight with police at Panchbaria on the Jessore-Magura Highway in Jessore town in early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased is Yunus Ali,40, a resident Bhallukghar village in Keshabpur upazila of Jessore.

Tipped off that a gang of robbers were preparing to commit robbery on the highway by placing logs, a team of police went to the spot at about 4:30am, said Jessore Kotwali police officer-in-charge Akkas Ali.

Sensing the police presence, the robbers opened fire on the law enforcers and hurled crude bombs, prompting the policemen to fire back, triggering a gunfight.

Yunus was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, while his associates managed to flee the scene.

However, two police constables—Mostafizur Rahman and Asadullah Asad—were injured in the gunfight.

They were admitted to Jessore Police Hospital.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Police also recovered some crude bombs and several sharp weapons from the spot.

Yunus was wanted in several cases, including for robbery and extortion, the OC said.
