Bagerhat:  Two high school teachers were jailed for six months by a mobile court at Chitalmari in Bagerhat on Monday. The teachers were reportedly made comments on a prophet of Islam that hurt believers.

Chitalmari police inspector Robiul Islam said a mobile court, led by acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Anwar Parvez sentenced Hizla High School head teacher Krishnapada Mahali and assistant teacher Ashok Kumar Ghoshal to six-month imprisonment.

Robiul Islam said Ashok Kumar on Sunday reportedly made a blasphemous comment while teaching science to the Class X students. The comment wounded the religious feelings of some students. The aggrieved students, along with their parents, on Monday morning gathered on the school premises and started agitation.

They complained against Ashok Kumar to the head teacher. He, however, turned down the objection and expressed his support for the assistant teacher.

This made the guardians furious. They beat up the head teacher and detained him in the school library.

On information, police went to the school and took the teachers to the office of the UNO.

UNO Anwar Parvez, also the executive magistrate, recorded deposition of seven students and based on their complaints sentenced Krishnapada Mahali and Ashok Kumar to six-month imprisonment.

Anwar Parvez said the sentencing was handed down according to 298 section of Penal Code 1860.
