2 Bagerhat teachers jailed for hurting religious sentiment
Bagerhat: A mobile court in Chitalmari upazila has sentenced two school teachers to six months’ imprisonment each for hurting the religious sentiment of Muslims, reports UNB.
The convicts are Krishna Pad Mohli, 46, head teacher of Hijla High School in the upazila, hailing from Kodalia village of Mollahat upazila, and Ashok Kumar Ghosal, 54, another teacher of the same school and a resident of Kuralthala village of Chitalmari upazila.
Chitalmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate M Anwar Parvez handed down the verdict on Monday setting up a mobile court.
Talking to reporters, Anwar Parvez said the school’s teacher, Ghosal, made a blasphemous comment over Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) during a class on Sunday.
Though the students and guardians complained to the head teacher of the school Krishna Pad Mohli, he supported Ghosal’s speech, the UNO added.
Outraged by the disparaging comments, nearly 600- 700 local people, including students and guardians, confined the two teachers in a room and informed police.
As the teachers confessed to the allegations, they were sentenced to six months’ jail each under the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), said Anwar Parvez.
Contacted, officer-in-charge of Chitalmari Police Station M Rezaul Karim said the two teachers were sent to Bagerhat jail after the judgment.
