AL man killed in pre-poll violence
Kushtia: Ahead of the fourth phase of union council election, an Awami League activist was killed during a clash between the supporters of two chairman candidates of Awami League and AL rebel party on Thursday morning.
At least 15 people were also injured during the clash.
The deceased is Laltu Molla.
Local people said supporters of the reigning chairman and AL candidate Akhteruzzaman Biswas attacked the men of AL rebel party aspirant Sheikh Sirajuddin in the Dahakula area at Alampur union of Sadar upazila at about 9:00am.
The two groups involved in a clash which left 15 including Laltu Molla injured.
Later the injured were taken to Kushtia General Hospital, where doctors declared Laltu dead.
Panic gripped the area following the death of Laltu and ensued fresh clash.
Later, police took the situation under control.
The Kushtia additional superintend of police (ASP) Joynul Abedin said additional police members have been deployed on the spot after the clash.
The law enforcers also held 15 people for their alleged involvement with the murder, said the ASP.
However, no cases were filed in this connection.
The fourth phase of union council election is scheduled to hold on 7 May.
