Moulvibazar: A businessman was rescued from Mekanichara hill in Srimangal upazila of Moulvibazar on Thursday night seven days after he had been kidnapped from Dhaka.

The victim is Mohammad Osman Gani, 62, a resident of Uttara in Dhaka.

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) also arrested six people in this connection.

The arrestees are Liton Miah, 28, Sabbir Ahmed Sumon, 27, Kalam Miah, 22, Aurun Gar, 48, Abu Taher, 50, Mohammad Latif Mia, 28.

On 12 March, Maruf, who was known to Osman Gani, along with his associates, took Osman to Srimangal in the name of purchasing a land there. Later, the kidnappers took him to an abandoned house at Mekanichhara hill area on the same day.

Later, the kidnappers demanded Tk20 crore as ransom from the family members of the victim over phone.

On 13 March, the son-in-law of Osman Gani lodged a complaint with RAB-9 Sirmangal camp.

After dealing with the kidnappers Osman’s family asked them to come to Choukidekhi area under Airport thana for taking the ransom money on 18 March. When the kidnappers reached the area they opened fire sensing the presence of the elite force, prompting the RAB members to retaliate.

After a gunbattle, the RAB members arrested Liton, Sumon and Kalam while the others managed to flee the spot.

Following the confessional statement of the arrested kidnappers, the RAB members conducted a drive in hill and rescued the kidnapped businessman from an abandoned house around 7:30pm on Thursday.

Later, they also arrested three others kidnappers—Aurun, Taher and Latif Mia from the spot.
