Jhenidah: A suspected robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Shalikhar intersection in Kaliganj upazila on early Saturday.

The deceased was Iqbal Hossain, a resident of Shalikhar village.

Receiving information that a gang of robbers were taking preparations for looting night coaches and goods-laden trucks on the Kaliganj-Arpara road, a police team went to the spot at about 2:00am, said Kaliganj Police officer-in-charge (OC) Anwar Hossain.

Sensing the presence of the team, the robbers exploded crude bombs and opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate.

Iqbal sustained bullet wounds and died on the spot while his accomplices managed to flee, the OC said.

However, police recovered one revolver, three rounds and some sharp weapons from the spot.

Police said Iqbal was wanted in several cases filed with Kaliganj, Jhenidah Sadar, Jessore and Chuadanga police stations.
