Dhaka: A court here on Monday sentenced seven men to death and a woman to life imprisonment for killing a Swechhasebak League leader in the city nine years ago.

The condemned convicts are Mahmudur Rahman Sohel, Hasan Sarwar Dipu,

Mohammad Shahadat, Mohammad Shafiq, Mintu, Noman Ibne Bashar, Liton

Hossain while the lifer is Jahanara Begum.

The court also fined Jahanara Begum Tk 20,000.

Among the eight convicts, six were tried in absentia.

According to the prosecution case, a group of terrorist shot dead Swechhasebak League leader Moniruddin Monu in front his house in Shah Ali Bagh area of Mirpur in the capital on 15 August 2006 as he refused to pay them the money which they had earlier demanded as extortion.

Victim’s brother Akbar Ali filed a case against some unidentified men.

Police after investigation submitted charge-sheet to the court on 30 October 2007 accusing eight people of the killing.

After examining the records and testimonies of the prosecution witnesses, Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 Judge ABM Nizamul Haque delivered the judgment.
