Suspected robber injured in ‘gunfight’ in Joypurhat

Joypurhat: A suspected robber was injured in a ‘gunfight’ between his cohorts and police at Pakarmatha Bridge area on Joypurhat-Akkelpur Road in Sadar upazila of Joypurhat early on Tuesday.

The injured is Saju, a leader of an inter-district robber gang, a resident of Singra village in Natore.

Joypurhat Assistant superintendent of police Ashok Kumar Pal said on a tip-off that a gang were preparing to commit robbery in the area, a team of police conducted a drive there at about 1:30am.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the robber gang opened fire at them, prompting them to fire back that triggered a gunfight.

The gunfight left Saju injured with bullet while other members of his gang managed to escape.

Saju was admitted to Joypurhat Adhunik Hospital under police custody.

Saju was wanted in several cases for robbery filed with different police stations, the ASP added.
