DSCC polls: Election Commission discloses affidavits

Dhaka: BNP-blessed mayoral aspirant in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election Mirza Abbas is wealthier than Awami League-backed candidate Sayeed Khokan.
This was learnt from the affidavits submitted by the candidates along with the mayoral nomination forms. The Election Commission disclosed the affidavits on Monday.
Affidavits show that the annual income of BNP standing committee member and its Dhaka city unit convener Mirza Abbas is nearly Tk 7.35 crore while that of Sayeed Khokan, AL’s Dhaka city unit organising secretary, about Tk 42 lakh.
According to the information provided in the affidavits, Abbas has moveable and immoveable property worth over Tk 62 crore while Khokan has assets to the tune of nearly Tk 48 crore.
The liability of Abbas is Tk 75.65 crore, much higher than Tk 19.27 crore of Khokan.
Though there is no criminal case against Khokan now, there 37 cases against Abbas. But Khokan was accused in five criminal cases in the past, while Abbas was in 24 cases.
Both the mayoral aspirants are graduates and their profession is business.
Of the annual income of Abbas, Tk 10,581,543 comes from rent of houses, apartments and shops while Tk 62,715,290 from share market and Tk 174,250 from other sectors.
Among the moveable assets, Abbas has Tk 5,000,000 in cash, while bank deposit of Tk 1,062,123, bonds of Tk 3,506,79,000 and Tk 42,483,584, fixed deposit of Tk 106,557,149, motorised vehicles of Tk 9,750,000, gold of Tk 200,000, electric machineries of Tk 1,000,000, furniture of Tk 700,000 and others of Tk 9,000,000.
His immovable assets include non-arable land worth Tk 18,480,000, two buildings of Tk 13,548,123 and Tk 26,259,645, and Tk 40,000,000 booking money for lands.
Of the annual income of Sayeed Khokan, Tk 3,234,150 comes from the rent of house, apartments and shops while Tk 832,630 from business and Tk 108,000 as director’s fees.
The movable assents include Tk 11,046,578 in cash, bank deposit of Tk 43,476, share of Tk 177,190,675 and Tk 14,700,000 and motorised vehicle of Tk 3,800,000 and business investment of Tk 3,404,487.
Khokan’s immovable assets include non-arable land of Tk 230,000, his inherited residential cum commercial building of Tk 268,949,000.
He has bank loans worth Tk 192,777,000, much less than Abbas’ liability of Tk 756,525,903.
Meanwhile, the affidavit submitted by BNP leader Nasir Uddin Pintu shows his annual income is over Tk 88 lakh and he has movable assets of Tk 18 crore, immovable asset of Tk 3.72 crore and his wife and son have total liability of Tk 3.05 crore debt.
Pintu is accused in three criminal cases now and was accused in two cases in the past.
Another BNP leader Abdus Salam’s annual income is Tk 445,000 and that comes from house rent, while his moveable asset is worth Tk 51 lakh.
He has 42-decimal of land and a six-storey building. The amount of Salam’s liability is over five lakh.
The mayoral aspirants submitted their affidavits along with nomination forms in the DSCC within the deadline expired on Sunday.
Earlier on 18 March, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad announced the election schedules for DSCC and two other city corporations - Dhaka North City Corporation and Chittagong City Corporation fixing the vote on April 28.
