Flood situation remains grim in Kurigram
The overall flood situation in Kurigram remained unchanged on Sunday although the water levels in the Brahmaputra, Dharala and Dudhkumar rivers have slightly receded.
According to Kurigram Water Development Board (WDB), more than 200 villages in char areas on the basin of the Brahmaputra River have been flooded as water in the river is flowing 24 centimetres above its danger line, leaving over 70,000 people marooned, reports UNB.
The affected upazilas are Kurigran Sadar, Nageshwari, Ulipur, Chilmari, Roumari and Razibpur.
Hundreds of families of several char areas — Balakata, Jhunkarchar, Char Parbotipur, Bhagabatipur, Ulipur, Guzimari and Dagarkuthi — have taken shelter on roads as they have lost their homes to riverbank erosion.
The flood victims have alleged that they have been living in extreme miseries for lack of emergency supplies and safe drinking water although the officials at Kurigram Relief Department claimed that they have distributed some 8,449.740 metric tonnes of rice among some 4,22,087 flood victims before Eid.
