11 Sundarbans robbers hand over their arms
Monga and Bagerhat: After ‘Master Bahini’, 11 members of two other forest robber gangs-‘Majnu Bahini’ and ‘Eillias Bahini’- surrendered to Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal along with their arms and ammunition at BFDC jetty in Mongla, Bagerhat on Friday.
The gang members deposited 25 firearms and 1000 rounds of bullet. The firearms included 11 foreign one-barrel guns, three two-barrel guns, two air rifles, three shooter guns, five shutter guns, a revolver, said Lt Col Faridul Alam, commanding officer of RAB-8.
The 11 members of the two gags are Majnu Gazi, son of Amir Ali Gazi of Daulatpur of Khulna city and chief of ‘Majnu Bahini’, his associates Babul Hasan, Md Jahangir Hossain Rahmat, Md Idris Ali, Ismail Hossain, Majnu Sheikh, Md Rabiul Islam, Md Abul Kalam Azad, Md Enamul Haque and Md Ellias, son of Bakkar Gazi of Moheshwaripur village of Koyra upazila in Khulna and chief of ‘Ellias Bahini’ and his associate Md Nasir Hossian.
They used to attack trawlers of fishermen, golpata and wood cutters and honey collectors and abduct fishermen for ransom in deep forests of the Sundarbans, reported news agency United News of Bangladesh.
Earlier on May 31, 10 members of Sundarbans-based infamous robber gang 'Master Bahini,' including its ringleader, surrendered to Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in presence of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
Addressing the surrender programme the home minister said the members of the robber gangs promised to return to normal life as they realised their fault.
He also said the government will provide all support to those robbers who surrendered. Rab and the law enforcing agencies will continue their drives in the Sundarbans to stop robbery, he added.
RAB DG Benzir Ahmed; Lt Col Md Faridul Alam, commanding officer of RAB-8; Mohammad Maniruzzaman, deputy inspector general of police, Khulna Range, Bagerhat deputy commissioner Md Jahangir Alam were present on the occasion.
