A suspected criminal was killed in a gunfight with police at Aruakandi in Sadar upazila of Jhenaidah on early Tuesday.

Identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Harendranath Sarker said tipped off that a criminal gang was staying in the area, a team of police conducted a drive there at about 3:30am.

Sensing the presence of police, the gang members opened fire towards them, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate.

At one stage, they managed to flee the scene.

Police recovered a body from the spot and sent it to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Police also recovered one shutter gun, five hand bombs, three sharp weapons and two rounds of bullet from the spot.
