Man killed in Gazipur ‘gunfight’

Gazipur: A man was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Tistar Gate area of Tongi early on Thursday.

The deceased is Jewel alias Bagha Jewel, a resident of Salimganj village in Banchharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria.

Tongi Police Officer-in-charge Firoz Talukder said tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area to arrest Jewel when he along with his associates was staying there at about 3:00am.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, accomplices of Jewel opened fire on them, forcing police to fire back that triggered a gun battle.

Jewel was caught in the line of fire and injured while his associates managed to flee the scene.

Police arrested Jewel and took him to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Nitor) where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Three policemen, including Assistant Sub-Inspector Biplob Miah, were injured during the gunfight.

Police recovered one pistol, some sharp weapons and three bullets from the scene.

Jewel was wanted in eight cases, including for arms and murder, the OC added.
