Brahmaputra, Ghagot cross danger level in Gaibandha

Gaibandha: Water level of the Brahmaputra, and the Ghagot rivers crossed their danger marks on Sunday night and the rivers were flowing 13cm and 15cm above respective danger levels on Monday morning inundating the river basin areas of the district.

Water level in all the four major rivers flowing through the district rose sharply in last 24 four hours till Monday 9:00am due to incessant rainfall and on rush of hilly waters from the upstream, reports BSS.

The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) here said the water level in the Brahmaputra rose by 22cm, the Teesta 22cm, the Karatoa 10cm and the Ghagot 39cm during the period.

Of them, the Brahmaputra was flowing 13cm above its danger level at Fulchharighat point and the Ghagot 15cm above its danger mark at New bridge Road point of the district while the Teesta was flowing at Sundarganj point 39cm, the Karatoa at Katakhali Bridge point 93cm below their respective danger levels.

With the rise of water level in the Brahmaputra river, the river basin areas of Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari and Saghata upazila had been inundated and the standing crops particularly jute and summer vegetables went under flood water.

Apart from this, with the rise of water level in the river, the erosion took serious turn at many places along the western side of the river including Chandipur, Kapasia, Kamarjani, Gidari, Urya, Gozaria, Saghat and Holdia unions of the district creating immense sufferings to the erosion victims.

Many erosion and flood victims had taken shelter on the nearby flood control embankment with their belongings including domestic animals and poultry birds and were passing their days miserably.

Talking to the BSS Executive Engineer of BWDB Prokash Krishna Sarker said as the Brahmaputra was flowing over its danger mark, the officials and the employees had been kept alert and vigil there to protect the embankment from any kind of destruction.

As the water level of the River Ghagot continued to rise, security measures had also been tightened at the town protection embankment so that any vested quarters could not cut it to create immense sufferings of the people of Gaibandha municipality, he also added.
