Gaibandha: Overall flood situation in chars and Brahmaputra river basin under four upazilas here further worsened as the river was flowing 50cm above its danger mark rising by 37cm water level in last 24 hours ending on Tuesday morning.

The low lying areas of both sides of the River Ghagot which flew through the main land of the district has also been flooded as the river is also flowing 56cm above its danger level at New Bridge Road point of the district town in the morning.

According to officials water level in all the four major rivers flowing through the district rose sharply in last 24-hour till Tuesday 6 am due to incessant rainfall and on rush of hilly waters from the upstream.

The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) here said the water level in the Brahmaputra rose by 37cm, the Ghagot 41cm, the Teesta 21cm, and the Karatoa 3cm during the period.

Of them, the Brahmaputra was flowing at Fulchharighat point of the district 26cm and the Ghagot at New Bridge Road point of the district town 56cm above their respective danger levels, said the officials.

But, the River Teesta was flowing at Sundarganj point 18cm, and the Karatoa at Katakhali Bridge point 90cm below their respective danger levels, the officials added.

With the rise of water level in the Brahmaputra river, the chars and the river basin areas of Sundarganj, Sadar Fulchhari and Saghata upazila had been inundated and the standing crops particularly jute and summer vegetables went under flood water.

Apart from this, with the rise of water level in the river, the erosion took serious turn at many places along the both sides of the river including Kamarjani and Goghat areas under Sadar upazila creating immense sufferings and much anxiety to the erosion victims and threatened people.

Many erosion and flood victims had taken shelter on the nearby flood control embankment with their belongings including domestic animals and poultry birds and were passing their days miserably for want of food and drinking water.

Acting deputy commissioner M. Shamsul Azam said the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief had allocated 450 tonnes of rice and Tk 6 lakh including 1,000 packages of dried food for the flood victims of the four upazilas here to mitigate their sufferings.

The distribution of allotted rice and cash money including the packages of dried food had already started to the flood victims since Sunday under the direct supervision of the district and upazila administration, he also said.
