Comilla: A young man was shot to death and five others injured in a clash in Barpara union council of Sadar upazila  of Comilla on Saturday night as two groups of villagers locked into an altercation over felling trees of a graveyard.

The deceased is Russel, a resident of the area, reports UNB.

Local people said there had been a longstanding dispute between two groups of villagers over felling some trees at the graveyard for some repair works.

As a sequel to the dispute, around 40 people, led by Barpara union council member Saju, launched an attack on their rivals in front of Mainamati Medical College Hospital in the union council at about 7:30am.

The attackers hacked and fired gunshot at their rivals, leaving several people injured.

Critically injured, six people including Russel were rushed to Mainamati Medical College Hospital.

Later, as the condition of Russell deteriorated, he was shifted to Comilla Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries around 8:15pm.

The Kotwali Model Police Officer-in-charge Abdur Rob said a young man was killed in an attack by rival group in the area.

The situation of the area is now under control, he added
