Narayanganj: Rumour concerning collapse of a bailey bridge and surging crowd on a relatively narrow space have led to the death of at least 10 Hindu pilgrims during holy bath at the River Brahmaputra in Narayanganj, an investigation report revealed on Monday.

A seven-member probe body was formed just after the disaster on 27 March to bring out the causes behind the sad incident.

The body, led by its convener Ishrat Hossain Khan, also a deputy director of local government department, submitted its report to the deputy commissioner of the district Anisur Rahman Mia on Monday late afternoon.

The investigation body recommended a 15-point initiative that includes construction of a three-kilometre long terminal through a bank of the mighty river, eviction of illegal grabbers and constructions by the terminal and reclamation of government land around the spot.

Anisur Rahman Mia said he had already forwarded the recommendations to the ministries concerned to enforce in full.

At least 10 Hindu pilgrims died in a mad rush during Maha Astami Snan festival at Langalbandh on 27 March.
