3000 new judges needed to deal with 28 lakh cases
Dhaka: At least 3000 more judges need to be to reduce the huge backlog of some 28 lakh cases in the country’s lower courts, reports UNB referring to a Parliament Secretariat press release.
At present, there are only 1700 judges including magistrates to deal with some 28 lakh cases pending with the lower courts, according to a report placed at the 14th meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry on Tuesday.
“The report suggested that it’s essential to appoint at least 3000 more judges, if we want to reduce the backlog of cases,” said the press release.
Besides, the report recommended formation of a monitoring cell, headed by Supreme Court Chief Justice, for speedy disposal of a further 3.25 lakh cases pending with the High Court.
A total of three reports ---two of the Law Commission and one of the parliamentary committee—were placed and discussed at the meeting, held with its chairman Suranjit Sengupta in the chair at Jatiya Sangsad.
The parliamentary watchdog suggested the government to take necessary measures for quick disposal of the cases pending the lower court and the higher court.
It also discussed unusual delay in proceedings of the August 21 grenade attack case and suggested quick disposal of the case.
The parliamentary committee also suggested expanding activities of the Judicial Administration Training Institute to every divisional city of the country.
Committee member Law Minister Anisul Huq, Abdul Matin Khasru, Sahara Khatun, Shamsul Haque Tuku, Abdul Majid Khan, Talukder Md Yunus, Ziaul Haque Mridha and Safura Begum attended the meeting.
