25 killed in road accident

Faridpur:  Twenty five people were killed in a road accident on the Faridpur-Barisal Highway in Faridpur early on Thursday.

Around 20 people were injured during the accident in Koidobi area of Bhanga municipality, 60kilometre west of Dhaka, at about 1:00am.

The deceased could not be identified immediately.

Police said the Patuakhali-bound ‘Sonartari Paribahan’ bus dashed road side trees as its driver lost control over the steering at about 1:15am.

Some of the passengers said the accident took place as the bus driver tried to overtake a ‘Sakura Paribahan’ bus.

The victims are residents of Barisal and Patuakhali.

Locals, Bhanga Highway police and fire fighters rescued the victims and sent them to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex and Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

The rescuers recovered around 19 bodies from the bus. The bodies were kept in Banga Highway police post.

Around 26 injured passengers were taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital and six of them died while undergoing treatment.

The hospital authorities said the number of deaths might be increased. Five injured are in critical condition.

Police are trying to identify the deceased by sorting information from their mobile phones.
