Independent candidate wins Lohagara mayoral post

Lohagara, Narail: Independent candidate Ashraful Islam, also the Lohagara Upazila Bangladesh Awami Juba League president, won the mayoral post in municipal election held on Sunday.
Ashraful, who took part in the election defying the ruling party’s decision, got 6659 votes while his closest contestant Lipi Khanam, a candidate picked up by Awami League, got 4433 votes.
Lohagara election returning officer and Narail polling officer Anwar Hossain declared the results.
A mobile court, led by executive magistrate Zahidul Alam, detained two polling agents of Awami League candidate Lipi Khanam from two polling centres — RL Pasha Government Primary School and Kholishakhali Primary School centres. They were Selim Sardar of Gopinathpur village and Jahangir of Rajapur village. They were picked up as they tried to influence the voters.
The court also arrest a voter, Murad, at Lohagara Pilot High School centre for keeping fifteen ballot papers in which the boat symbols were stamped.
A total of four candidates contested for the mayoral post. The two other candidates are BNP’s Newaz Ahammad Thakur and independent candidate Shariful Islam. Twelve candidates contested for the reserved counsellor post for women and 34 fought for nine ward counsellor posts.
