Man killed in Jhenaidah ‘gunfight’ with cops
Jhenaidah: An alleged robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police beside the Jhenaidah-Kushtia Highway in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah early on Sunday.
Identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Gopinath Kanjilal, assistant superintendent of police (Sadar Circle), said acting on secret information that a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery in front of the Dudhsor Housing Project site on the highway, a team of police launched a drive there at about 3:00am.
Sensing presence of the police, the robbers opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.
At one stage, a member of the gang was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while others managed to flee the scene.
Two police constables—Nazrul Islam and Amad Ali—were also injured in the incident.
Police recovered one shutter gun, two bullets, five live bombs and some sharp weapons from the scene.
