Sylhet: Students of two departments of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on Monday confined their vice-chancellor to his office for four hours following the resignation of two teachers.

Campus sources said SUST Physics Department head Dr Syed Badiuzzaman Faruque and Geography and Environment Department head Dr Sharif Md Sharafuddin resigned in the morning.

As the news spread around the campus, the students of the two departments staged demonstrations boycotting classes.

At one stage, they put the office of VC Prof Dr Md Aminul Haque Bhuyan under lock and key at about 12:00pm demanding cancellation of the resignation.

The students also staged a sit-in in front of the VC office till 4:00pm.  

They withdrew the siege when he assured them of settling the matter by a day.
