Man killed in Jhenaidah ‘shootout’

Jhenaidah:  A man was killed in a reported gunfight at Kaliganj upazila in Jhenaidah in the early hours of Friday.

Identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The Kaliganj Police said informed that a gang was planning to commit robbery on Jhenaidah-Jessore Road at Pirojpur’s Karaitala area they led by Kaliganj police Sub-inspector Shukumar raided the area at about 3:30am.

Sensing the presence of police, the robbers opened fire, forcing them to retaliate, triggering a reported gunfight.

Later, the bullet-riddled body of a suspected robber was found on the spot. However, his cohorts managed to flee.

He was taken to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

However, Kaliganj Police Officer-in-charge (OC) Aminul Islam said two police constables were also injured during the gunfight. They received primary treatment.

The OC said police recovered a shutter gun, a bullet, and five bombs from the spot.
