Shafik Rehman freed on bail
Gazipur: Shafik Rehman, former editor of Bangla daily Jaijaidin, was released from Kashimpur jail on bail on Tuesday.
He walked out of the part-2 of Kashimpur Central Jail at about 12:50pm after his bail order reached the jail authorities, said jail superintendent Prasanta Kumar Banik.
Rehman’s wife Taleya Rehman and other relatives received him at the jail gate with red roses, reports UNB.
Earlier on 31 August, the Supreme Court granted him bail for three months in a case filed over an alleged plot to abduct and kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy in the USA.
On 7 June, the High Court rejected the bail plea of Shafik Rehman in the case.
Later on 17 July, the SC granted Rehman’s prayer to file an appeal before the court against the HC order.
On 27 April, a Dhaka court sent the journalist to jail on completion of his second remand in the case.
On 16 April, detectives arrested Shafik Rehman from his Eskaton Garden residence in the city.
The senior journalist in his early 80s was shown arrested in a criminal conspiracy case filed with Paltan Police Station on 3 August 2015 in connection with the attempt to abduct and kill Joy.
