7 get life term for killing lawyer
Pirojpur: A Barisal court on Sunday sentenced seven people to life term imprisonment for killing a lawyer in Kawkhali upazila in Pirojpur in 2009.
The convicted are Qamrul Islam, Monirul Islam Santu, Rejaul Talukdar, Sohrab Hossain, Al Amin Hossain Rony, Azizul Haque Khokon and Mizan.
They are employees of a local NGO ‘Jubok’ in Kawkhali upazila.
According to the prosecution, advocate Giasuddun Khan Masud of Sehangal in Nesarabad upazila of the district deposited Tk 5 lakh in a local NGO ‘Jubok”.
When Masud wanted to get back his money, NGO manager Qamrul Islam asked him to deposit Tk four lakh more to get a land in Nesarabad.
On 11 October 2009, when Masud was going to the house of Qamrul with Tk 4 lakh the killers shot him, leaving him critically injured. They fled the scene taking the money away.
Masud died at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Victim’s elder brother Al Amin Khan filed a case against some people with Kaukhali Police Station.
Later, according to the directives of Home Ministry, the case was transferred to Barisal Speedy Trial Tribunal from Pirojpur district court.
After examining the records and witnesses, Judge of the tribunal Dilip Kumar Bhoumik handed down the verdict acquitting three other accused.
