Khaleda Zia campaigns for Tabith amid demo by ‘ruling party activists’
Dhaka: Amid huge demonstrations by the ruling party activists with black flags against her, Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia conducted electioneering in favour of her party-backed mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Tabith Awal for the second consecutive day on Sunday.
The BNP chief along with her some party leaders and activists with police protocol came out of her residence at about 4:30pm for campaigning in the city’s Uttra area.
As her motorcade reached Uttara sector No-1, a group of ruling party activists, led by Awami League’s Uttara unit president Tofazzal and general secretary Habib Hassan, started staging demonstrations carrying black flags and chanting slogans against her.
At one stage, they tried to encircle the BNP chief’s vehicle rising slogans like ‘Answer as to why my brothers have been murdered and ‘Ghost of Pakistan return to Pakistan’.
Khaleda entered ACB Plaza and Amir Complex and sought votes from shoppers, shopkeepers and commoners in favour of Tabith. She also carried out campaign at Rajuk Commercial Complex and North Tower urging voters to bless and vote Tabith.
The BNP chief again faced the similar demonstration by another group of AL activists when her motorcade reached sector-7 of Uttara.
On her way back from Uttara at about 6:30pm, some ruling party men holding black flags tried to obstruct her motorcade at Uttara House Building crossing.
Some ruling party men with slogans hurled sticks and black flags towards Khaleda’s motorcade, prompting law enforcers to disperse the AL men while BNP leaders and activists enclosed her vehicle helped her passing the area without any untoward incident.
Khaleda also faced another demonstration by the ruling party activists near Khilkhet crossing.
However, several hundred BNP men guarded Khaleda’s vehicle to safely pass the area.
Later, the BNP chief went to Jamuna Future Park in the Baridhara area conducted electioneering there for nearly 20 minutes.
She was campaigning at Suvastu Market in Shahjadpur area till filing of the report at about 8:15pm.
Khaleda mainly visited several shops and shopping malls on Sunday and sought votes for Tabith.
Earlier on Statuary, without any prior announcement and schedule, Khaleda along with some party leaders and activists came out of her residence at about 4:15pm and carried out nearly a five-hour hectic electioneering in different areas of the DNCC seeking votes for her party-blessed mayoral contestant Tabith Awal.
Starting her polls campaign from Pink City in Guslhan-2, she also went DCC Market, Navana Tower in Gulshan-1, Badda, and Banani Mohakhali Bus Stand, Tejgaon and Hatirjheel areas, and urged voters to cast their ballots for ‘Bus’, the election symbol of Tabith and she herself distributed his leaflets.
