Chandpur: A couple was hacked to death allegedly by their son-in-law over dowry at Kamranga village in Chandpur early Monday.

The deceased were Iqbal Hossain, and his wife Mamtaz Begum, resident of the same village.

Assistant superintendent of police Kamrul Islam said Sumon Sheikh, a resident of Bagerhat, had been married with Lucky Begum, daughter of Iqbal Hossain five years ago.

Sumon used to torture Lucky for dowry since after their marriage.

He came to his father-in-law’s house on Sunday night and demanded money as dowry from Lucky’s parents.

As a sequel to that, a quarrel took place between them and Sumon chopped them indiscriminately in the dead of night, leaving Iqbal dead on the spot and his wife Mamtaz and their daughter Lucky critically injured.

Later, Mamtaz died on way to Comilla Medical College Hospital and Lucky was admitted to CMCH.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Chandpur General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Sumon went into hiding after the incident. A case was filed in this connection.
