Rangpur: An alleged mugger was killed in a reported gunfight between police and his associate at Chandipur village in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur early on Tuesday.

The deceased is Humayun Kabir, in his twenties, a resident of Bekulia village in Sadar upazila of Barisal.

The Pirganj Police Officer-in-charge Rezaul Karim said jute trader Hafizur Rahman was returning home after withdrawing Tk13 lakh from Pirganj branch of Islami Bank on Monday afternoon.

When he started from the upazila headquarters, a microbus carrying a gang of muggers, numbering five, intercepted Hafizur and the riders introducing themselves as members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) picked him up.

When the microbus reached Salti Gopalpur area in Mithapukur upazila, local people stopped the microbus and caught all the five muggers.

Being informed, a team of Pirganj Police Station went to the spot and arrested the five.

Later, police along with the five conducted a drive at Chandipur village in Pirganj upazila to arrest their other associates in the dead of night.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, associates of the gang opened fire at them, prompting the police personnel to retaliate that triggered a gunfight, leaving Humayun dead on the spot.

However, other associates of the gang managed to flee the scene.

Police also recovered one shutter gun, three sharp weapons, two bullets, and a walkie-talkie set from the spot.
