5 to die for murder

Bagerhat: A Bagerhat court on Tuesday sentenced five people to death for killing a youth in 2009.

The condemned convicts are Rintu Mir, Ziaur Rahman zia, Mannan Mia, Alfaz Hossain Rubel and Faijul Chowdhury.

The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each.

According to the prosecution, the convicts killed Taj Mir of Patorpara village in Sadar upazila, over previous enmity on 19 June 2009.

Later, they took away cash Tk 75,000 and a mobile phone set from Taj’s possession and buried the body at Khejurpukur Par in the night.

On 20 June 2009, Muslima Begum, mother of Taj, filed a murder case accusing four people with Sadar Police Station.

Later, police recovered the body of Taj from the area on 15 July following the confessional statement of Rintu Mir, a cousin of Taj.

On 27 December 2010, Abdul Haque, then sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted chargesheet against six people.

After examining the records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge court-1, Mohammad Mahiduzzaman handed down the verdict acquitting one accused as allegation brought against him was not proved.
