Attack on Khaleda Zia's motorcade again
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s motorcade came under attack again at Banglamotor in Dhaka on Wednesday during her city election canvass for the party-backed mayoral candidate Tabith Awal.
Two of Khaleda Zia’s own security forces were injured in the attack.
This is the third time Khaleda’s motorcade has come under attack in last three days.
Witness said a group of Chatra League leaders and activists headed by central leaders Mashiur Rahman Rubel and Mamun Ahmed carried out the attack.
But central organising secretary Mashiur Rahman said Chattra League did not attack on the motorcade of Khaleda Zia.
‘The car of Khaleda Zia’s CSF and motorcycles of Juba Dal and Chattra Dal were driven towards us. Four Chattra League activists were injured at that time.’
Mashiur Said, Chattra League was canvassing for Sayeed Khokon, mayoral candidate for the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
‘We were distributing leaflets. Attack was carried out on us from the motorcade. They also fired at us.’
Earlier on Tuesday, the motorcade faced hindrance at Fakirapool area.
On Monday, Khaleda Zia’s motorcade came under attack at Kawran Bazar in Dhaka during her city election canvass, but the immediate steps by her own security forces helped her escape injuries.
A group of people attacked the motorcade while BNP chief Khaleda was addressing to the traders of Kawran Bazar kitchen market in front of Bangladesh Rural Development Board office, popularly known as Palli Bhaban.
Witnesses said that a group of around 20 people, allegedly from Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jubo Leage activists were chanting Joy Bangla slogans behind Khaleda’s motorcade at about 6:00pm. Later, a group of them engaged in scuffles with BNP men while the BNP men tried to chase them away.
Within a minute, the group of attackers returned with a group of 50 to 60 people having wooden sticks and rods. They swooped on and vandalised several vehicles from Khaleda’s motorcade, mostly carrying Chairperson Security Force (CSF) officials. They also broke glasses of several vehicles with wooden sticks.
Protesting the attack, BNP on Monday called countrywide hartal for Wednesday and protests on Tuesday.
BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed announced the hartal at a press briefing in Dhaka on Monday night.
