Rajshahi: Police arrested Mahtab Ali Khamaru, closed aid of hanged militant leader Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, from his locality under Bagmara upazila in Rajshahi on Monday.

On a tip-off, a police team conducted a sudden raid at Hamirkutsa Talgharia area at around 11:00am and arrested Khamaru, locally known as regional commander of outlawed Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), said Selim Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bagmara Police Station.

Khamaru was wanted in several criminal cases like killing, terror attack and extortion and also involved in subversive activities for long, the OC added.

Referring to the case records, the police officer said, Khamaru was directly involved in various terrorist activities in 2004 as the then second-in-command of Bangla Bhai.
