Man killed in ‘shootout’ with police in Kushtia

Kushtia:  A man was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Mirpur uapzila in Kushtia on early on Tuesday.

The deceased is Akhtarul Islam alias Brithish, in his thirties. Police claimed British is member of a robber gang, and was wanted in several cases of arms, robbery, and explosive materials act.

The Mirpur police Officer-in-charge Kazi Jalal Uddin Ahammed said being tipped off that a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery in front of Nimtoli College on Kushtia-Meherpur Road; police conducted a drive in the area at about 3:00am. The robbers hurled bombs and opened fire to police. Police also fired back triggering the reported gunfight between them that left one of the robbers dead on the spot.

The other robbers managed to flee the spot.

The law enforcers also recovered a shutter-gun, two bullets, and some locally made sharp weapons from the spot.

The body was sent to Kushtia Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, said the OC.
