Nasir wins in Chittagong

Chittagong: Awami League-backed candidate AJM Nasir Uddin was unofficially declared elected mayor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) as he defeated his nearest rival pro-BNP mayoral contender Manjur Alam with a huge margin in Tuesday’s polls.
Returning officer Abdul Baten announced the results at the makeshift control room of the Election Commission set up at the gymnasium of MA Aziz stadium.
Nasir got 4,75,361 votes while Manjur polled 3,04,837votes, according to results came from all the 719 centers.
Manjur Alam, however, boycotted the election bringing allegations of huge vote rigging.
His withdrawal from the electoral race came from a press conference held at Manjur's main election office at Dewanhat in the port city at about 11:20am.
Speaking at the press conference, Manjur's chief election agent and BNP senior leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said their candidate stepped out of the race as armed miscreants took control over '80 percent' of the polling centres with the backup of police and Election Commission officials since the morning.
‘This is my sixth and the last election. This politics does not suit me anymore. I’m also pulling out me of politics, too,’ he told the press conference.
Two other mayoral candidates of Islamic Front-blessed MA Matin and Islami Andolon Bangladesh-backed candidate Wayes Hossain Bhuiyan also pulled out of the elections.
