Jhalakati: A court on Monday sentenced five persons to life term imprisonment for killing a woman at Narikelbaria village under Rajapur upazila in Jhalakati in 2001.

The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer more six months in jail.

The convicts are—Abul Basar Khan, 60, Abdul Mannan Fakir, 45, Kabir Hossain, 40, M Alam, 55, and Babul Hawlader, 50. All are residents of Narikelbaria-Rola village of the upazila.

Additional District and Session Judge M Bazlur Rahman gave the verdict in presence of the convicted persons.

The prosecution story, in brief, is that the convicts chopped Ambia Begum, 60, over a previous enmity on January 16, 2001.

Critically injured Ambia died at Rajapur Upazila Health Complex on the next day.

After his death, the victim’s son Kader Khan filed a case with Rajapur Thana.

Police, after investigation of the case, submitted charge sheet before the court against the convicted persons on July 12, 2004.

Later, the Judge, after examining 10 witnesses and evidence, found them guilty and handed down the punishment.
