Death-row convict killed in Joypurhat ‘gunfight’

Joypurhat: A death-row convict was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at the village of Dadra-Jonti in Sadar upazila of Joypurhat in the early hours of Wednesday.
The deceased is Safinul Islam Safin, in his late twenties, the resident of municipality area of Joypurhat. RAB said Safin was wanted in ten cases including six murder cases. He was also convicted and awarded death sentence in a murder case.
RAB 5 Commanding Officer in Joypurhat Major Hassan Arafat said being informed that Safin and his associates were staying at the village of Dadra-Jonti of the Sadar upazila, the law-enforcers went to the spot at about 3:00am.
Safin opened fire to police as the RAB team neared Mamun petrol pump area at Dadra-Jonti village. RAB also fired Safin and his associates back, which triggered a reported gunfight between them. At one stage, Safin caught in the line of fire and died on the spot.
However, Safin’s associates managed to flee from the spot.
The body was kept at Joypurhat Modern district Hospital.
RAB also claimed to recover a foreign-made pistol, three bullets from the spot.
