2 killed, 5 cops hurt in Kushtia ‘gunfight’

Kushtia: Two suspected robber were killed in a reported gunfight with police in Gobindagunia area on the Mirpur-Bheramara Road at Mirpur upazila in Kushtia on Friday night.

Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Five members of police including an officer-in-charge (OC) were also injured during the reported gunfight.

The Mirpur police in Khustia Officer-in-charge Kazi Jalal Uddin Ahammed said being tipped of that a gang of robber is preparing to carry out a robbery by felling logs on the road a team police went to the spot at about 11:45pm.

Sensing the police presence the gang opened fire and hurled bombs at them, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate with gunfire triggering a reported gunfight.

During the shootout two unidentified robbers caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while their cohorts managed to escape.

Later, police recovered a pistol, three bombs, a machete, and two sharp weapons from the spot.

The bodies were sent to Kushtia General Hospital from autopsy.

The injured police members were taken to Mirpur Upazila Health Complex in Kushtia.
