Lightning strikes kill 10

Ten people were killed and two others injured in separate incidents of lightning strike in Sunamganj, Jamalpur, Sherpur, Gaibandha and Bagerhat districts on Friday evening and Saturday morning.

In Sundamganj, two farmers – Haridas of Mahtabpur village and Abdul Kader of Ramjan Ali of Muradnagar village – died on the spot as a thunderbolt struck them in the morning while they were harvesting paddy in Kaliakota haor in Dirai upazila this morning.

In another incident, Rasheda Begum was killed after having hit by a streak of thunderbolt while she was working on the courtyard of her house at Konarsora village in Tahirpur upazila, said Tahirpur Police officer-in-charge Shahidullah.

In Jamalpur, three farmers were killed in separate incidents of lightning strike in different villages of Dewanganj upazila in the morning.

Dewanganj Police officer-in-charge Aslam Hossain said the three farmers – Fulu Miah of Rampura village, Masud of Nalkarchar village, and Rubel Hossain, of Char Hatibhanga village – died on the spot as thunderbolts struck them at about 10:00am while they were working in the fields of their respective villages.

In Sherpur, Mariam Khatun, a class VII student of Sameshchura High School and daughter of Nur Hossain of the village, was killed in lightning strike at Sameshchura village in Nalitabari upazila at about 7:00 am, Nalitabari Police officer-in-charge AKM Aminul Haque said.

Meanwhile, Bilkis Begum, died on the spot when a thunderbolt struck her at Pagoljani village in the same upazila at the same time.

In Bagerhat, farmer Chejlin Mollik, of Aruabarni village in Chitalmari upazila, was killed and another man, Piklu Gazi, suffered injuries in a lightning strike during a storm while they were harvesting paddy on Friday evening.

In Gaibandha, Narayan Chandra and his wife Kamali Rani sustained injuries by lightning strike in Kuthipara area of the district town while they were cooking at about 9:00 am.

Local people rescued them and took them to Gaibandha Adhunik Hospital where doctors declared Narayan dead.
