Suspected robber killed in Magura ‘gunfight’

Magura: A man was killed in a reported gunfight with police in West Ramnagar area of Magura in the early hours of Monday.

The deceased is Shawkat Mondol, in his late thirties, a suspected robber, said the Magura police.

The Magura senior assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Shudarshan Kumar Roy said being tipped off that a gang of robbers was taking preparation for robbery, a team of patrol police led by Sadar police Sub-inspector Shamim Hossain conducted drive in the Ramnagar area on Magura-Jhenaidah Highway at about 3:15am.

Sensing the presence of law-enforcers, the robbers opened fire to police. Police also fired back and the robbers fell back. Later, the robbers managed to flee from the spot.

The ASP said police recovered bullet-hit body of a robber and the arms the robber left behind. Police found a pistol, two bullets, three machetes, and an axe on the spot.

The body was sent to Magura Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

Shudarshan Kumar Roy said Shawkat was accused in seven cases of robbery at the village of Kamarpara in Madhukhali upazila of Faridpur.
