Gopalganj: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tributes to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing a wreath at his mausoleum here on Tuesday afternoon.

After placing the wreath, Sheikh Hasina stood there in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memory of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Flanked by cabinet members as well as newly-elected leaders of Awami League (AL) Advisory Council and AL Central Working Committee (ALCWC), Sheikh Hasina, also the AL president, laid another wreath at the grave of Bangabandhu as the party chief.

She later offered Fateha and joined a special munajat seeking the eternal peace of the departed soul of Bangabandhu and other martyrs of the 15 August carnage.

Sheikh Rehana, the younger daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, also offered Fateha and took part in the munajat along with the Prime Minister and senior AL leaders. Then, they joined a prayers programme on the occasion.

Earlier, Sheikh Hasina arrived in Tungipara at about 11:40am by an Air Force helicopter on her first visit to Tungipara, the ancestral home of Bangabandhu, after her re-election as the Awami League president.

On her arrival at Tungipara upazila complex helipad, she straight went to the mausoleum of Bangabandhu to pay homage to the great leader.

The Awami League president will chair a joint meeting of AL Advisory Council and ALCWC to be held at about 2:00pm.

Sheikh Hasina was re-elected president of Awami League unanimously in the 20th national council of the party on 22-23 October, while Obaidul Quader as its new general secretary.
