Bodies recovered days after men went missing
Families and co-workers on Thursday identified the bodies of two young men who were killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion at Jatrabari in Dhaka on early Wednesday.
The two persons were missing for more than a week before they were found shot and killed by law enforcers.
RAB officers on Wednesday said Shakhawat Hossain Rifat (22) and Mujahidul Islam Jihad (33) got shot while throwing a firebomb at a RAB team at Matuail in Jatrabari at about 3:00am.
They were taken to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared them dead.
Post-mortem reports say they were shot on chests, abdomens and several other parts of their bodies.
Both the families came to the DMCH after reading a news report that included the duo’s bloodied face at daily Naya Diganta on Thursday and identified the bodies.
‘My brother went missing 11 days ago. He was not available over phone. So we filed a general diary with the Kafrul police in Dhaka nine days ago,' Mujahid’s brother Jahidul Islam Shohag told the NTV.
He said that Mujahid kept himself detached from the family members for the last twelve years.
Responding to a question about Mujahid’s political affiliation, Shohagh said, ‘Mujahid was doing business in Karwar Bazar and had no political affiliation. When and how he got missing we do not know,’ said Shohagh.
Another youth Shakhawat Hossain Rifat was an employee at Uttaran Store, a tire store at Karwan Bazar, said his fellows.
‘He was missing since January 21. Seeing his photograph on the newspaper, we came here and identified the body,’ said Sharif, who works at a neighbouring tire shop.
The manager of his workplace Shah Alam Khan on January 22 filed a general diary with the Tejgaon Police that reads that Rifat was missing from 2:30pm on January 21. Later, a case was also filed in this regard on January 27, said Sharif.
RAB officials on Wednesday told NTV that these two youths got injuries at a gunfight when a group of picketers were hurdling bricks and cocktails at a RAB patrol team at about 3:00am.
Since 4 January 2015, at least 16 people were killed in crossfire or gunfighr, while many others were found dead with bullet injuries.
