A court here on Tuesday placed Maniruzzaman Chowdhury, owner of the two-storey tin-shed house that collapsed on 15 April killing 12 people, on police custody to be quizzed for five days.

Metropolitan Magistrate Jakir Hossain Tipu passed the order when Rampura Police sub-inspector Julhas Moni, also the investigation officer of the case filed in connection with the incident, produced Maniruzzaman before the court seeking a 10-day remand.

The court also rejected the bail petition filed by Maniruzzaman’s counsel.

Earlier, members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Maniruzzaman Chowdhury on Sunday night.

12 people, including two children, were killed as the two-storey tin-shed house, erected on a water body on bamboo pillars at Begerbari Jheelpar in East Rampura, caved in at about 4:00 pm on 15 April, leaving an unspecified number of people trapped inside.

It was alleged that Moniruzzaman, who is also president of Jubo League unit of Ward No-22, constructed the tin-shed house showing his muscle power after grabbing the land.

Rampura Police sub-inspector Abdur Rashid filed a case in connection with the house collapse on 16 April.
