Satkhira: Police have submitted charge sheet against 50 people, including former local MP Habibul Islam Habib, in connection with the attack on the convoy of the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina in Kolaroa upazila in Sathkhira on 30 August, 2002.

Kalaroa Police Inspector (investigation) Sheikh Shafiqur Rahman, and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on 26 April.

However, the matter came to light on Tuesday.

Habibul Islam Habib, also former president of district BNP, and former Kalaroa municipality chairman Akterul Islam were among the charge-sheeted accused.

On 30 August 2002, Sheikh Hasina, the then opposition leader, had gone to the district to visit a raped housewife.

On the way, BNP leaders and activists allegedly attacked her convoy in Kolaroa on the instruction of the then lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib.

The attackers fired gunshots to kill Hasina but she survived the assassination attempt while others accompanying her sustained injuries.

Several journalists were also assaulted during the incident.

Failing to lodge a case with the local police station, freedom fighter commander and Awami League leader Moslem Uddin had filed a case with Satkhira magistrate court against 27 BNP men in connection with the gun attack. However, police submitted the final report before the court.

In 2013, the plaintiff filed a petition with the High Court seeking re-investigation into the incident and the HC then sent the matter to the lower court.

As per the lower court order, a case was filed against 27 people with Kalaroa Police Station on 27 October, 2014, 12 years after the incident.
