Mahmudur Rahman walks out of jail on bail
Gazipur: Nearly three years and seven months after his arrest, Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman was released on bail from Kashimpur jail on Wednesday.
He walked out of Kashimpur Jail part-2 at about 1:00pm after the bail order reached the jail, said jailer Nashir Ahmed.
BNP leaders and activists, pro-BNP journalist leaders, relatives and well-wishers received Mahmudur at the jail gate.
Later, he was admitted to the city’s United Hospital as he complained of pains in different parts of his body and various others complications, BNP chairperson's media wing member Sairul Kabir Khan said.
Police arrested Mahmudur from his Karwan Bazar office on April 11, 2013.
On August 13, 2015, a court here sentenced Mahmudur Rahman to three years’ jail in a case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission for non-submission of his wealth statement
The court also fined him Tk one lakh.
On November 1, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld a High Court order that granted bail to Mahmudur Rahman in a case filed in connection with the plot to abduct and kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy in the United States.
With the order, the journalist secured bail in all the 70 cases filed against him.
On September 7, The High Court granted bail to Mahmudur in the case.
On May 9 this year, a court here sent him to jail in the case.
The case was filed with Paltan Police Station on August 3, 2015 for attempt to abduct and kill Joy, also the ICT adviser to the Prime Minister.
