‘Robber’ killed in Barguna ‘gunfight’
An alleged ringleader of an inter-district robber gang was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police at village of Kalagachhia in Amtoli upazila on early Thursday.
The deceased is Abdul Jabbar, believed to be 50.
Tipped off that a gang of inter-district robber gang was taking preparation for robberies in the area, a police team went to the spot at about 3:00am, said Amtoli Police Station Officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Shahidullah.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on the police, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight, he said.
At one stage, Jabbar was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, while the others managed to flee, the OC added.
Four policemen were injured in the gunfight.
Abdul Jabbar was wanted in 15 cases including murder and rape filed with police stations in Amtoli, Barguna Sadar, and Patuakhali, added Shahidullah.
Police sent Jabbar’s body to Borguna Sadar Hospital morgue for the autopsy.
