Meherpur:  Three suspected extortionists killed in a reported gunfight with police at Gangi upazila in Meherpur in the early hours of Tuesday.

Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The Meherpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Anisur Rahman said unidentified extortionists demanded money via phone calls from owners of some brickfields including one Khabir Uddin, owner of Ekta Brickfield, in the village of Motmura.

A group of around 25 miscreants carrying arms attacked on Ekta brickfield and tried to snatch extortions. Being informed, police went to the spot. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the miscreants hurled two bombs to the police. Police also fired back, which triggered a gunfight between the law enforcers and the miscreants, said the SP.

Later, the miscreants flee from the spot and police found three bodies there.

Police also recovered two firearms, two bullets, two machetes, and two bombs from the scene.

The bodies were sent to Meherpur Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, said Anisur Rahman.
