Ensure academic facilities of suspended BUET students: HC
Dhaka: The High Court on Monday asked the authorities of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) to ensure the academic facilities, including classes and examinations, of four students suspended for allegedly assaulting a teacher.
An HC bench comprising by Justice Qazi Rezaul Haque and Justice Abu Taher M Saifur Rahman passed the order in response to separate writ petitions.
The court also issued a rule asking the concerned authorities why the decision of the suspension against the four students would not be declared illegal and invalid.
On 13 April, the four BCL men allegedly went to the office of Jahangir Alam, associate professor of the Civil Engineering Department of Buet, and assaulted him following a Facebook (A social networking site) status over the execution of death sentence of war criminal Kamaruzzaman.
On 21 April, the Buet academic council suspended the four students, including two Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists for different terms for allegedly assaulting the teacher.
BCL’s Buet unit president Shubro Joyti Tikadar and secretary Abu Sayed Kanak –- students of the Medical Engineering Department –- were suspended permanently while Pratik Dutt, a third year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) was suspended for two semesters, and Golam Saqlain Ratul, also a third year student of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) suspended from his dormitory.
