Cops closed for negligence in duty
Benapole (Jessore): Three policemen of Sharsha Police Station were closed to the district police lines for negligence in duty letting two accused flee from custody on Thursday.
The policemen are Shomen, sub-inspector, and Mahmudur Rahman and Rabindranath, constables.
Sources said police arrested two accused, including a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader of Kalaroa municipality unit in Satkhira in connection with the attack on convoy of the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina in Kalaroa upazila on August 30, 2002, on Wednesday.
The arrested were Abdul Mazid, president of Kalaroa municipality unit JCD, and Shahidul Islam, an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami Satkhira district unit.
However, the two accused managed to flee police custody while being taken to be produced before a court in Jessore by a three-wheeler on the Benapole-Jessore Road at Natunhat in sadar upazila on Thursday.
Later a case was field with Kotwali Police Station in the night.
Abdul Mazid was an accused in a case filed for attack on convoy of the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina in Kalaroa on August 30, 2002.
Jessore police super Anisur Rahman said punitive actions will be taken against the responsible policemen if they failed to re-arrest the accused within 24 hours.
Meanwhile, Shahidul Islam, an activist of Satkhira district unit Jamaat, was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police at Ramnagar in Sadar upazila early Friday while Abul Mazid sustained bullet injures in a gunfight with police at Kazirhat Thakurbari in Kalaroa upaizla early this (today) morning.
