Suspected robber killed in Ashuganj ‘shootout’

Ashuganj:  A suspected robber, named Sharif Mia, was shot to death during a reported gunfight with police at Ashuganj in Brahmanbaria in the early hours of Monday.

Ashuganj police assistant sub-inspector Sharfin was also injured during the reported gunfight took place on Ashuganj-Talshahar road in the Sonarapur area.

Police claimed Sharif Mia, a resident of Chartala area of the upazila, was accused in eight cases including robbery with Ashuganj police.

Police said being tipped off police arrested Sharif in Araishidha Bazar of Chartala in the upazila on Sunday night. Later, based on his information, police conducted a raid in Sonarampur in the upazila. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, Sharif’s associates opened fire to them, and police also fired back, which triggered a gunfight.

Sharif and Ashuganj police SI received bullets during the gunfight. Later they were taken to district sadar hospital, where doctors declared Sharif dead. The police official was shifted to Dhaka for better treatment.

The Ashuganj police Officer-in-charge (OC) Muhammad Selim Uddin said police also recovered pipegun, cartridge, and machete from the spot.
