Sylhet: A man who severed his wife’s tongue and a tendon of her left leg in Sadar upazila on December 15 surrendered before a court here on Monday.

Belal Miah, a resident of Lamuya village in South Surma upazila, turned up before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in the morning, said officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station Akhter Hossain.

Later, police sought a 10-day remand for him.

On December 15, Belal along with his two associates went to the house of his father-in-law at Darsha village in Sadar upazila where his wife Suma Begum had been staying for the last one year.

Later, he took her to a storeroom where firewood was kept, cut off her tongue and a tendon of her left leg.

He also stabbed her indiscriminately before fleeing along with the cohorts.

Critically injured Suma was admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Suma’s brother Hafiz Miah filed a case with the police station against Belal and his family members on December 16.

Police arrested Belal’s mother Joybunnesa, another accused in the case, on December 17.

According to the case statement, Belal and his family members used to torture Suma for dowry since their marriage in 2008. Torture intensified after Belal married for the 2nd time within three years of the first marriage.

Unable to endure the torture, Suma went away to her father’s house a year ago.
