Govt trying to block progs to hush up misdeeds: BNP
Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Saturday alleged that the government is trying not to allow BNP to hold its programmes making January 5 as the ‘democracy killing day’ only to hush up its misdeeds.
“BNP won’t be affected if the government obstructs its programmes on January 5. Instead, such act will again unmask the government,” said BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.
He came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after placing wreaths at BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave together with leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal, marking its founding anniversary.
Mosharraf hoped that though the ruling party leaders are threatening to thwart BNP’s programmes, the government will not do it showing respect to democracy.
On December 28, BNP announced that its leaders and activists wearing black badges would bring out processions with black flags in districts and metropolitan cities across the country on January 5 to mark the anniversary of January 5, 2014 general election as the ‘democracy killing day’.
It also announced to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on January 7 to mark the day.
The ruling Awami League, however, announced that it will observe January 5 as the ‘victory of democracy day.’
Mentioning that January 5 is a stigmatised day for democracy, Mosharraf said observing the day as a victory of democracy day is an absurd matter. “People could not exercise their right to franchise on that day in 2014.”
He said people expect that they will get back their voting rights and democracy in the New Year. “But, if the government blocks our programmes, people will try them one day.”
